Roku is a set top box company that owns it’s own hardware and software and aggregates content from 100s of providers like Apple TV, Netflix, Paramount.

Overview

BACKGROUND

Ad market has been consistently declining and it has affected Roku’s business too. I was brought into this project to come up with new revenue streams using ads.

AUdience

Our main audience is called streamers who use the Roku TV Box and Roku mobile app to discover and consume content.

Goal

Our goal is to increase the monetization of the app by placing new ad slots across important user journeys across the app.

PLANNING WITH THE TEAM ON WHAT TO BUILD

Met with the Design, Product, Advertising Tech, Engineering and Business teams to decide on which ad type can we should built first and prioritize things according to company strategy and feasibility.

Release 1

We decided to release the Remote Interstitial design. Eventually other designs were also released and the performance was compared across multiple experiments and user cohorts.

Notable REsults

  • A comprehensive plan that introduces multiple ad slots across the app and helps us monetize the Roku mobile app.

  • We will be closely watching the Ad performance metrics for both media & entertainment and main stream ads.

  • There should be increase in the Ad revenue from the current app and many other growth opportunities in the future.
